To read the documents of the Second Vatican Council
Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has announced that the Year of Faith will begin on the 11th October 2012 and will end on the 24th November 2013, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King. The Year of Faith coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th Anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Pope Benedict highlights these two documents in particular during this Year of Faith, as a source of inspiration and learning. He firstly emphasizes the importance of the documents of the Second Vatican Council and borrows Blessed John Paul II words to say they “have lost nothing of their value or brilliance.” “..the Council as the great grace bestowed on the Church in the twentieth century.” Porta Fidei no 5.
The key to understanding the documents, is that they need to be ‘read correctly.’ Then they will be a powerful source of renewal for the Church.
It is always important to know what the Church teaches. To become well informed requires us to use our intellect, to study and read these documents, and Pope Benedict wants us to read them correctly. Each week I am going to publish in the parish newsletter a quote from the documents of the Second Vatican Council for my parishioners to read. This is an easy and hopefully effective way of making the documents available to the parish.
The same principle applies to men discerning their vocation. They need to become well informed. To use their intellect, learn about the Catholic Faith and the priesthood. It is easier to make good decisions when one has become well informed.
“To Save A Thousand Souls,” written by Fr. Brett Brannen is a suggested book for men discerning a vocation to the diocesan priesthood. It is easy to read and very informative. For those who are interested in getting a copy please contact me.
Kind regards and God bless
