St Peter may not have been the perfect disciple, but he did have the essential quality which was needed to become the first Pope, that of loving Jesus.
St Peter may have denied Jesus three times and not even recognized him on the shore in the Gospel today, but it is he who was called to “feed the sheep.” (John 21:1-19)
A disciple of Jesus, which we are all called to be, is the call to love Jesus like St Peter and to show our love for him. It is difficult to follow Jesus if we don’t love him.
Perhaps men who are discerning their vocations need to focus primarily on loving Jesus and showing their love for him, using St Peter as their example. The fruit of their love for Jesus will assist them to understand what vocation God is calling them to. Pray for us St Peter.
